Governor Information 2019/20

School Governors

The Governing Body of Lander Road Primary School plays a crucial role in the life and work of our school. It is made up of volunteers from the local and wider community, plus the Headteacher and a member of staff. The role of the Governing Body is defined in its constitution.

Governors undertake their roles and responsibilities through committees. There are four committees. They are:

  • Full Governing Body which meets normally 5 times a year
  • Finance and Environment
  • Inclusion and Safeguarding
  • Pay and Performance

In addition, we have an Equality & Diversity Working Group which has developed an Equality and Diversity policy to explain our attitude to Equal Opportunities, identified our key priorities for further development by asking parents, staff and governors for their views and then used the consultation to develop an Action Plan.

We have ‘lead governors’ who undertake specific monitoring roles in such areas as ‘Safeguarding’, ‘Pupil Premium’, ‘Sport and PE’, Special Educational Needs and Disability’ and the School Improvement Plan.

Governors also undertake ‘Governor Impact Visits’. This involves a group of governors undertaking visits to school with a specific focus which enables the governors to gather evidence first hand including talking to pupils and staff.

The main work of the governing body is outlined below:

  • Setting and reviewing the schools aims and policies and strategic direction
  • Undertaking the Headteacher’s performance management and monitoring the impact of staff appraisal
  • Monitoring the well-being of pupils & staff
  • Continuing to improve the standards of teaching and pupil achievement
  • Setting the school’s budget and monitoring the impact of expenditure on the quality of teaching, pupil achievement and the learning environment
  • Appointing the Headteacher and supporting the appointment of all staff
  • Acting as a link between the local community and the school
  • Dealing with complaints about the school

This does not mean that we manage the school. Professionals are employed to do this. Governors provide support and challenge and hold the school to account. Governors sign a Code of Conduct each year – which outlines our responsibilities and the values and principles of undertaking a public service.

You can find out what we have been doing by looking at the school’s website which includes information on governing teams, roles and biographical information as well as a record of governor attendance at committee meetings.
