P4C is short for Philosophy for Children.   Children are taught how to create their own philosophical questions. Through short, fun sessions the children learn and develop the following skills:

Speaking and listening

Observation and memory

Turn-taking and patience

Respecting others

Making connections or distinctions

Making choices

Offering reasons

Asking open questions.

Story time is also used as a wonderful opportunity to encourage children to ask 'wondering questions'.

The children were asked by the King to invite some guests to his party.   He sent them pictures of characters from his favourite fairy tales and asked them to choose.   The children had to choose a character and tell the King why he should invite them.

Picture 1 Troll - he can't bring his stick.
Picture 2 Giant - he will be good.
Picture 1 Prince - he won't do anything bad.
Picture 2 Sleeping Beauty - she's got a pretty dress on.
Picture 3 Fariy Godmother - she'll do magic things.
Picture 4 Wolf- if he promises not to eat anyone.
Picture 5 Rapunzel - she has nice clothes and nice hair.

The children received a letter from the leader of a planet called Plato.  He gave them a very important job to do.  The children were asked to create Perfect People for his planet, they had to think carefully about their ideas such as:

  • What is a person?
  • What does it need to look like?
  • Is there such a thing as the perfect person?
  • Is it alright to make mistakes or look different?
